AS part of Van2017’s attempt at introducing the general community to the concept of a Games mascot, Nasi, the friendly, lovable and social bird, has been sighted participating in different activities in and around Port Vila of late. In fact he has been quite busy spreading Christmas cheer and getting into the festive season.
Last week Nasi was part of the launching of the Christmas in the park event, and a few days later with the assistance of Port Vila hospital staff, he was also able to make a special visit to the children’s ward where he handed out Christmas gifts, danced around and brought smiles all around from both little patients as well as their parents.
When 2017 comes around, Nasi will be launching a few different competitions and programs, which will involve visiting schools throughout the country and taking part in cultural and sporting events happening throughout the year ahead. The Van2017 Mascot program doesn’t just involve the promotion of the Pacific Games, but it’s designed to engage community groups of all ages.
With only 346 days left to go before the games officially start, Nasi and Apu, his trusty friend and companion (who is Nasi’s voice to help him share his messages), will be quite busy as soon as the New Year commences.
Nasi hopes to visit as many primary school children as he can with messages of nutrition, hygiene, healthy active lifestyles, sportsmanship, social inclusion, respect for women and keeping our environment clean.
