Basketball Federation preparing squad for Pacific Mini Games

LEAGUE competitions will begin soon to put together a squad to train for selection in the 3×3 Basketball competition in the Van2017 Games.

Vanuatu Basketball Federation will soon liaise with the leagues to begin competitions to chose around 12 players per category, with training to run until the end of September.

It is also planned that in the beginning of the month of October, the final squad will be chosen.

“We will run few short tournaments between clubs, and national teams will be participating and this should be good lead up training for the Team towards the Games,” said the President of Vanuatu Basketball Federation, Franck Franconieri.

“We all very happy and excited, however, it’s a very short period of time to prepare for the competition.”

Mr Franconieri said the 3×3 development through Hoops for Health Program and the National Basketball Development Officer, had only reached Port Vila.

“We will send information to other islands, but because of the short notice it will be hard to include them in this preparation program, but we are open for any suggestions from other leagues as well.

“And given that we are three months away from the Games, our squad will mainly come up from Port-Vila or Shefa Leagues.”

Vanuatu Basketball Federation is now looking at targeting basketball leagues and players, including officials and volunteers, to get its selection done as soon as possible.

It plans also to call on Non-Government Organizations for sponsorship on items such as warm up shirts, water bottles and shoes.

The inclusion of basketball in the list to make 14th sport discipline in total for the 2017 Pacific Mini Games comes after the decision from PGC to include netball tournaments in the second week of the Games.
