THIS month Vanuatu will commemorate 19 years of the passing of the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu, Father Walter Lini, who died at the Vila Central Hospital on February 21, 1999.
His body was later laid to rest on his home island of North Pentecost.
Every year, national leaders gather at two venues to commemorate Lini Day.
Some national leaders usually travel to North Pentecost to gather at Fr Lini’s tomb where a church service is conducted followed by laying of wreaths, with speeches, customary ceremony and a traditional feast at Nazareth in North Pentecost.
In Port Vila, other national leaders attend the Anglican Church Parish at Tagabe where a memorial church service takes place followed by the laying of wreaths at the Lini memorial stone, speeches by national leaders and a public lunch.
