How Drinking Alcohol Can Affect Your Acne Problems

Acne and Alcohol: Does Drinking Matter?

If you suffer from the curse of acne and you have been known to consume large quantities of fermented spirits from time to time, would curbing your alcohol consumption help your acne?

So far no one has even bothered to try to find a link between alcohol and acne. That’s right; no research at all has been done. However, there have been studies on the effects of alcohol on hormone levels, and hormones do impact acne. Unfortunately, the results of these alcohol studies are far from conclusive. Although they do indicate a general increase in testosterone in men and estrogen in women who drink, no one can say with any certitude that there is a causal relationship between acne and alcohol.

However, it is a fact that excessive drinking, or excessive use of any drug for that matter, does increase stress. If you’ve done any investigating at all on acne and its causes, you know that stress is a leading contributor.

At the very least, this should give you something to think about. Is a nightly buzz or worse worth the increased stress the following day? From to time do you drink so much you forget to take your daily acne treatment regimen? You know that skin irritations contribute to acne problems. Have you ever woken up from a night of heavy partying with facial scrapes and abrasions?

If you scoff at all this and think alcohol has no effect, enter “Alcohol and Acne” into your favorite search engine and check the blog posts. There are a lot of people out there who report flare-ups after a night of heavy duty carousing. The body tries to cleanse itself of excess drugs through the skin which can definitely clog the pores. You know that clogged pores are anathema to acne sufferers. They allow dirt and body oils to become trapped. This trapped gunk can lead to body infections in the form of pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads.

So what more do you need to convince yourself that if you’re serious about improving your skin condition, you might want to cut back on the alcohol and drugs?
